Medical transcription does not require any special skills but it is an advantage to possess these following qualities:
- Being a fast, accurate typist- while not required, a good typist will make a much more productive and hirable transcriptionist.
- Knowledge of medical terminology- again, this is not a required skill but very helpful. You may be offered a higher salary and be able to get more clients by being familiar with medical terminology. If you are not familiar, you may find yourself spending a lot of time searching for definitions, making you less productive.

However, if you plan to make this a full time career, you may want to consider enrolling in a course or two on medical terminology at your local vocational school or community college. Most transcriptionists are paid for each transcript completed, not hourly. This means the faster you work, the more money you make. It is a good idea to brush up on your typing skills, too.
